From Loose Change to Firm Action: Police Step In at Piccadilly Gardens |
||
|
Officers from the Piccadilly Gardens neighbourhood policing team have carried out a targeted operation today aimed at tackling organised and aggressive begging within the city centre.
The proactive initiative focused on ongoing concerns from members of the public, local businesses, and visitors regarding persistent anti-social behaviour in and around the gardens. As a result of the operation, three adult males were arrested on suspicion of offences linked to organised begging activity.
In addition to the arrests, two of the individuals have been issued with Civil Community Protection Warnings. Police confirmed that two men have fixed home addresses and are currently in receipt of benefits, raising further concerns about the nature and organisation of the activity. The third individual, who does not have a stable address, has previously been offered support on numerous occasions, including access to accommodation and outreach services. However, officers stated that he has consistently refused to engage with the assistance provided.
A spokesperson for the team emphasised that enforcement action is only one part of a broader approach, which includes safeguarding and support for vulnerable individuals.
Speaking following the operation, Sgt Jon Wyatt said: “Today’s operation demonstrates the tenacity of our neighbourhood team in addressing the concerns of the public. While we remain committed to supporting those who are genuinely in need, we will not tolerate organised or aggressive begging that impacts the safety and wellbeing of our community. We will continue to work with partner agencies to ensure that help is available, but also take firm action where necessary.”
Greater Manchester Police have reiterated that members of the public should report incidents of aggressive begging, while also encouraging donations to recognised charities rather than individuals on the street.
